Deal Maritime & Local History Museum has an extensive collection of artefacts and archives on the history and development of Deal, Walmer, Kingsdown and the outlying districts. It welcomes donations of material to enhance the understanding and importance of both the maritime and the local history of the area.
As a registered independent charitable trust staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers we receive no outside funding. To maintain the extensive archives we are now obliged to charge a small fee for access to the collections. Research can be carried out on behalf of the enquirer ahead or instead of a visit, there is a fee charged for this service.
The museum collections, including the archives, are currently undergoing an extensive audit, to increase and improve the storage areas for objects and archival material held on site, thus releasing more space for the constantly enlarging research library and archives. The end result will give a more complete overview of the considerable archive material held by the museum for research purposes.
Please contact the curator if you wish to initiate a search for information that the museum might hold. A search fee of £15 (payable in advance) is charged. If able to help, an appointment can be made to view the material with an archives assistant. Copies can be supplied but will be charged for. Information can be supplied to the researcher separately, a fee is charged for this service and to cover any copyright of the material involved. All the money raised is spent on conservation and proper storage for the great range of archive material held in the museum.
For information please contact the curator in writing to the above address, or by e-mail: [email protected].
